Salt Lake City offers so many options for things to do and see, especially during the winter months.  No need to stay cooped up inside, there is so much more here than just chilly temperatures. If you are in Salt Lake during the winter season, we suggest getting outside and giving a few of these a try.

1. Skiing

This is a given, we are so fortunate to have some of the best skiing available to us so close to downtown. In the Cottonwood Canyons we have Snowbird, Alta and Brighton and in Park City we have PCMR and Deer Valley to name a few. For the busy young professional that doesn’t want to deal with the crowds, we recommend night skiing (typically 4-9pm). Lots of local resorts have these select hours and even give discounted rates if you ski during evening hours!

If you don’t have any experience skiing or you don’t own any equipment, no problem! Most resorts in the area have very affordable equipment rental fees.  And if you are completely new to everything skiing, most have very affordable ski lesson/equipment packages.

Tip: For the total beginner, we find that Brighton has the most cost effective rates for lessons. If you know of a local resort with even better pricing, please let us know in the comments!

2. Tubing

Weather you have kids or are single and looking for a fun day with friends, snow tubing never fails to make for a wonderful day. We actually have quite a few great options to choose from in our own back yard. Soldier Hollow in Midway offers the longest tubing lanes in Utah with 1,200-foot lanes and a magic carpet so you can relax and chat on your way back up to the top! Other places you could venture include, Wasatch Parc at Nordic Valley and Woodward in Park City.

3. Go Hiking

Ensign Peak, is located near the Capitol building in downtown SLC.  This peak is a historic site where Brigham Young climbed to survey the valley and began mentally mapping the city to be built. We are so lucky to have great hikes so close to the downtown area!  This particular hike is relatively short and sweet but provides some of the most stunning views of the downtown area. Be sure to wear proper footwear on this hike, due to the steep terrain, the footwear that you choose could make all the difference, depending on weather.

4. Snowshoeing

Are you longing for warmer days so that you explore local trails? Is your favorite hiking trail snowed over?  No need to wait! Strap on some snowshoes and make your way down beautiful snow filled paths and see your favorite trails in a whole new way.  Our favorite snowshoeing trails are among the miles of trails around Silver Lake in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Tip: The Solitude Nordic Center even allows you to rent a variety of snow gear including snowshoes for under $20 a day.
